Michelin Power One 2CT Vs. Pilot Power 2CT
« on: May 02, 2009, 07:06:50 PM »
Having just knackered a set of Michelin's new Power One 2CT's I thought I'd give people a little comparison...

I have just done a set of the new Michelin Power One 2CT (also known as the "Power One - Road") and I now have a set of Pilot Power 2CT.

Firstly the Power Ones are utterly incredible. You can buy race versions or the road version 2CT which is what I had. They stick like crazy and once they are warm I felt I had as much confidence as I have always had from the Pilot Race tyres I used to use. The thing with these tyres that amaze are the heat they get to and the the feel from the front! Its unlie anything I've tried before.

I did 1.5 trackdays at Snetterton and about 1200 miles (5 weekends eeek!) before the rear was more-than illegal so don't expect them to last... saying that, I can be known to ride like a loon. Eitherway, if you need confidence, I wouldn't spend my money anywhere else.

Ok... I then changed the rear to a Pilot Power 2CT and whilst this didn't feel great out of the box (maybe just coz it was fresh and slippy) I have to admit that I have not had an inch of movement, they do get warm although not in the same league as the Power One. I have not been round a track with them yet but I know plenty of people that have and they all say good things.

My assesment is a little biased as I still have the Power One 2CT front on the bike with a Pilot Power 2CT rear... imo this is the perfet combo of front end grip and rear longevity (the front would be shite in the rain).

Basically:

1) I absolutley adore the Power Ones and if money was no object, they are all I'd ride with (when dry)
2) The Power One 2CT front is utterly incredible, the rear is as good as the Power Race's from last year.
3) Pilot Power 2CT's are still great tyres and if you drop the pressures a little they still get super hot and sticky but don't "bubble up" on the surface much.
4) Pilot Power 2CT's will last you considerably longer... my workings will mean a rear lasts approx TWICE as long as a Power One (2.5/3,000miles).
5) If it rains... I wouldn't want to by riding on my Power One 2CT's.
6) The Power One 2CT is made to still be sticky when you are below the rain sipes and wear indicators... I found mine only went "off" when the canvas started to appear... grip was flawless until then.

Both are really great tyres but if you are a weekend kneedown rider who chucks in one trackday a month and blasts through a tank of juice atleast once a week then I'd say get the Pilot Power 2CT's.

If you are minted and do 2/3 trackdays a month on your road bike and not many miles at the weekend... but fast ones at that... then get the Power One 2CT's.

Hope that helps!   :D

never heard of power one's but after doing a track day on some 2ct's im pretty impressed. they are very good on damp/cold surfaces. i had no probs getting both rear and front all the way to the egde at a cold nurburgring gp circuit track day where the track was cold to the touch all day, and wet/damp for the first 2 sessions. braking was stable though not quite as good as something like a 002 (street) whilst turning in on the brakes.
