R1 crash advise (update)
« on: May 25, 2009, 06:56:23 AM »
Right as you may already know I hit a 4x4 yesterday as he decided to slam his brakes on and turn right last minuet without looking.
Now as it is just as much my fault for being too close, even though I was thinking aboout an overtake. (Dodgey part is we were coming to double white lines) and I know there is more to it, and the law has changed so it may no be classed as my fault.
But I have just had a closer look at the damage and all I need is a nose cone, clock bracket, left hand housing cover for the head light and an engine cover (even though that could wait)

My excess is £500, so do you think it is worth phoning the insurance.
I have just sent an email of to a breakers to get some prices but as it's bank holiday monday I don't realy exspect an answer today.
Also the guy driving the 4x4 asked me what I thought the damage would cost, so it's possible he would contribute as he admited it was both our faults (I did no such thing)

What do you think

Cheers

If you're happy to foot the bill yourself and you have no injuries then that may be the least stressful option. However, do you need to replace your helmet or leathers? If the costs are going to mount up then I would be tempted to get in touch with a solicitor.

Only my helmet, and I really am fine, just tender in a couple of places.

also it's not jusy the cost of the parts, i'm going to lose my no claims so of course my premium will go up next year.

if you need bits for it, there are several being broken or that have been broken for racing on ebay, so I have actually seen quite a few sets of body work etc on there.

actually they weren't too bad, when I spoke one of the chaps they wanted £500 for the full set fo panels (was thinking of getting a spare set for a) just in case and b) kind of liked the idea of the black panels on the red frame).

yes it's going to cost, just not quite as much as new

oh yeah, really sorry to hear this as well by the way,  :down for your troubles

thing is when you dont want to put it back to standard people will ask why, and  when you come to sell it. I would wait ot see what happens with the claim/solicitors and see where you stand mate.

Get some advice from a solicitor mate, especially if he's admitted liability in front of witnesses, as long as you didnt go over the white line whilst filtering your okay  :D I think, I'm sure Kerm/Kickstart would know for definite though, :D

Just had a call back from George Whites with some prices
Nose cone £270
Head light housing £30
Clock bracket £160 (But can be repaired)
Engine case cover £50

So just waiting for a call back from the driver. He is getting his looked at tomorrow so will decide what to do then.
TBH i'm hoping he will offer me a couple of hundred quid and call it quits.

As I said earlier my excess is £500 so i'm not sure I want to take the chance with the insurance, Just in case the majorty of blame is put with me and either way my premium will go up. I do need a new helmet as well but even with that and if he won't pay anything towards mine I will be no worse of overall doing it myself.

What do you think.

On a lighter note, I have taken it apart and put it back together this morning and with a bit of gaffer tape, it would be useable without the new bits  :rofl

tough call Lee i would speak to a good solicitor and see what he says regarding whos fault it was but that could be a long drawn out process. Like you said you could get the stuff from whites and fit it yourself for about £500 and a new helmet so hopefully you might be looking at around £700-£800. And hope he doesnt want any money off you that is.

Best of luck mate which ever route you take. :D

with a £500 excess and the hike in your insurance next year and the following couple i would say it wouldnt be worth the hassle claiming from it. you will be out of pocket and the insurance will make from it.
if he coughs up a couple of hundred then call it quits but he may be liable for the whole cost if proved his fault.
dont rush into it but get legal advice  :D

Clare and I both agree with Tony, get some advice but expect it would be better to sort it yourself. Just be grateful there are so many panels around because they make such good track bikes  :D

Clare wants me to point out I am not suggesting you put it on the track.......................................yet >:D

Just wait until she has knocked the rest of the front off it for you :D :rofl
