SMIDSY!
« on: February 08, 2010, 08:24:26 PM »
Having not had much riding this year as a result of the cack weather, I was delighted to see the sun out on Saturday and decided to have a blast.

Anyway, going up a major road out of Ipswich town centre, there are two lanes leaving town and only one going in towards town. I was in the right hand lane with no cars around me and in the opposite lane the traffic was queued up for some distance.

I was doing the speed limit of 30mph and all looked bright, clear and safe. All of a sudden someone going the opposite way got bored of the wait in the queue and decided on a u-turn!!!

I started braking as firmly as I could but in my mind I had already decided I was going to hit the him... I remember thinking that I was to put weight on my pegs and try to raise myself up so my body would vault over the car when the bike hit it.

Anyway, the rear wheel came up into a mega-stoppie. With my nuts on the tank and my arse up in the air, I flew inches past the fellas bonnet as he screeched to a halt across my lane.

All of a sudden it was over. I was parked on the side of the road with all the thoughts of a new bike, hospital, insurance claim etc fading away. I looked behind me thinking I was going to kill the fella. He was still parked across the lane with his head in his hands.

I had escaped and I was remarkably calm... having never had a "near death" incident I cant believe the things that went through my mind, like deciding how I was going to vault the car etc... anyone else had those thoughts?

|Thank god I'm still here!

The good news is both you and the bike came through it. Broken bones and a screwed bike aren't a nice proposition.

You are a very lucky man & you should put the Euromillions lottery on this Friday  ;)

I've had a few scary moments out on the road but nothing as bad as that (or worse) thank god

You obviously bounce well.

It's also amazing how hard you can brake in those situations.

How comes no damage to the bike?

Yeah, I escaped by the skin of my teeth... the stoppie was impressive and narrowly missed him! I honestly thought it was curtains though! :(

Glad your ok, it could have been a lot worse - but i thought it was funny that in your list of woes after you came off the bike the 'new bike' was the 1st thing you thought of b4 hospital and insurance. Nice 1

I had a similar accident last year but i hit the car and the only thing that i did was panic and shout aaaaargh as i flew through the air.

Funnily enough the only thing that went through my mind after the accident was the excitement of bike shopping to come.

We are a shallow bunch. :-)
