Just bought a 2000 model 4 weeks ago, just wanted to try something comfy for change this came up at the right price, never realy gave these a second thought before but digging about on some forums they seem quite a good bike for what it is, they were revamped in 96 with a change in the position of the crank and the gear box was altered which was a weak point ( its still crap ) the build quality is known to be better than normal, great tank range and all day comfort, will still do 130.

Fitted a power point for my sat nav so going to live with it for the summer

I can't comment on the comfort (although I always liked the idea of the TDM) but I did run a TRX850 for a year or so. Bought a mint 6 year old bike with 8,000 miles on the clock and it ran faultlessly apart from one thing. After another 8,000 miles of 'ab'use (it was warmed properly, 10 mile commute, 10 trackdays...) it started using oil in the right hand cylinder. Seemed to be valve stem seals rather than rings but by the time it had 21,000 on the clock it was burning 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles.
The warning light is on the level rather than pressure so was never an issue as long as you carried oil. I traded it in the end as I couldn't find oversize pistons and figured once I started digging inside it would get expensive.

I think the problem was the low inital mileage and the fact it must have been stood up for most of its life without being turned over. I probably didn't help but the Gixer 750 I had after that didn't miss a beat or burn oil in the 20,000miles I had it (no other bike has either).

Can you still drive 3 wheelers on a bike licence? or has that "privilege" been revoked by the DVLA?

You could always pretend its a KTM  :giggle

Helpful Paul, thanks. But do you know what make of bike they are ?

Of course Legz, always here to help. It's a Quasar, Reliant  Robin engine. Only problem is they are quite rare so maybe worth looking for something a bit more popular.

If you are seriously looking at travelling that distance a few times aweek then there are a few points you can consider.

One point, which a lot of motorcycle magazines have pointed out is that a lot of modern sportsbikes are quite capable of being used for long distance runs, tank range is adequate and they can be quite comfortable for long times in the saddle.
Negatives with sportsbikes I would say is their running costs (tyres, servicing, chains etc)
I would say you would be better off with shaft drive but a scottoiler could probably cut chain wear dramatically.
Handlebar or heated grips maybe beneficial aswell Legz, as would a tall screen.
I know alot of people rate the VFR750/800 aswell, but again servicing would let them down for me
If it was me doing that distance every day Legz I would seriously consider a BMW F800GS, plenty of power for what you want, more controllable in dodgy conditions than a sportsstyle bike and not as much to buy as its bigger brother. to top it off BMW will give you a test ride no problem so you can try the F800 and the S1000RR at the same time

:stupid I would also lean towards a beemer looking at that sort of mileage, comfortable, reliable, hold their value well. I'm a bit of a fan of the R1150/1200GS - unfortunately I'm a bit young to get a BMW, you should be OK though

 :LOL
Superbikers - with great power comes great stupidity
Supermotoerers - with less power comes irresponsibility
