A week in the life of a BMW S1000RR
« on: May 05, 2010, 05:43:43 PM »
Long story but bear with me.

Picked up the BMW a couple of weeks ago just in time for the nice weather.

Got it run in within 3 days (I really liked riding it!),booked in for service and looked forward to the 9000rpm hard limiter being  removed.

In it goes, oil dropped, filter changed and ECU updated to give me full power - just blipping it in nuetral was nice and crisp.

About 5 minutes later (and about 3 miles down the road) came my chance to open it up.

Traffic clears, engine and tyres warmed,4th gear and 9000rpm showing (private road obviously) and I give it half throttle.

A second later all hell breaks loose.

No,not mega acceleration as I expected.

A splutter, loss of power followed by the most horrendous death rattle i've ever heard.

Nursed it back to the dealers where panic ensued.

Within minutes the bike had been wheeled into the service dpt, fairings off and engine dropped.

BMW UK and Germany were informed.

Another few minutes later I had the keys to a loan bike (the F800R I posted pics of last week) and profuse apologies.

Gutted doesn't really cover how I felt - fooking hell, just done a year on a Ducati (including 4 track days) with the only issue being the clutch - BMW's aren't supposed to do this  :yikes :yikes :005_scry: :005_scry:

2 days later I get a call saying the engine was in Germany, stripped and being examined - looks like too big of a rod was fitted to too small a shell at the factory and as soon as the revs topped 10,000 the tolerances tightened causing crank and big end failure.

That's still to be confirmed.

I was also told a new engine had been taken off the production line,re-checked and was on it's way to the dealers - this was last Friday.

Bank holiday weekend so I wasn't expecting any news until the end of this week/beginning of next at earliest.

Well, got a call today saying the bike was ready !!!! :o

Off I go to return the F800 to be greeted with the sight of a cleaned, waxed bike with chain lubed looking great.

As a gesture of good will, the standard exhaust was missing - in it's place a £700 Akra in titanium and carbon  :o

Why can't certain Jap dealers get their head around what genuine customer service is?

This little saga could have left me with a bitter taste and a refusal to look at another BMW ever.

Instead,it's quite the opposite.

A calamity turned into a good experience.

I'm pissed off that it happened in the first place,no getting away from that but i've had the misfortune of experiencing warranty claims and 'customer service' from Ducati and the big 4 Japs.

So,big  :down to BMW UK,BMW Motorrad Germany and the dealers,Coopers of Sunderland.

Quick piccie:

Reet, just need to run it in again...

They could have at least done something about the colour scheme at the same time* ;)

Glad it's back together now  Tell them the 2 year engine warranty (or however long) starts from now on this engine ;)

moral of the story is:

if you've just bought a new bmw s1000rr and you want a free akropovic exhaust for it

take your bike round the corner from the dealers, wack the throttle open full until it blows up

then take it back to the shop.

So legs buys a bike engine blows and is repaired before Sheep has managed to get his bike sorted ;) :wistle

BMW are known for the customer service and that was very good customer service (although it should not have happened in the first place)

Hmm, I wonder what I'll get if mine blows up cos I already got the exhaust!  :LOL

Interesting if they have pinpointed the fault...I wonder how many others might have that issue (not run mine in as yet....)  ;)

Great news legz. That was a well kept secret too. Guess it's best not to say anything when still a bit pi**ed off especially when it has turned out as well as it could have.

Nothing definite so far - as soon as I hear I'll post it on here.

No other cases in UK or Europe but there was a similar 'incident' in the US - 220 miles on the clock.

Did they reset the clocks to zero?

No,that would be illegal considering the rest of the bike has done 600 miles
