And you think I'm Mad!!!!
« on: July 09, 2010, 08:54:04 AM »
This morning some friends of mine(Husband and wife) arrived in Gibraltar from Nordkapp in Norway completing a European End to End.

It took them 70 hours to cover the 3400 miles.
They had 1hrs sleep on the boat from Denmark to Germany, 4 hrs in a hotel in Lyon and a couple of extended stops.

This is there track. If you clip on the points you can see the times.

Now thats a ride out. All they have to do now is ride the 1500 or so miles back to Kent

Phil i can't see what anyone gets out of this to be honest,i mean what is the point in it,i'm sure if i needed too that i could do the distance in a similar time, would it not be better taking your time ,enjoying the scenery, having a few beers etc etc.I don't get it :o  As scooby says this must get dangerous at times, why risk your life and your pillions just for bragging rights ::)

Its not dangerous once you know how to do it. I've met some fantastic people and seen some fantastic sights. And a lot more interseting than riding locally all the time.

Tomorrow I'm going to a Ride to Eat with 20 other Iron Butt Riders in the Midlands

GTR1400 Kawasaki... they had an intermittent electrical fault which caused it to cut out a few times....  turned out to be a loose battery terminal

As for the danger... I reckon its a lot more dangerous tearing around local roads for a few miles and never really getting used to your bike before selling it for a better model

You're quite right mate, yes it would be dangerous for inexperienced riders etc....but with years of riding you know what you can safely do, & usually get better at it. I was a motorcycle courier & did many long blasts. (68.000miles one year !)
One day I had to take a tender to Clyde submarine base then back to Manchester to do a handfull of fairly local but not insignificant drops & then back to Manchester to take another tender to the south coast. On the whole I've found it more dangerous doing long stints in the car than on my bikes.
This is just my opinion.

I can't do long distance in a car...  Its just too taxing.

You are correct. Everything is dangerous unless you suss it out and figure how to do it wether that be Off-road/Road/Track/short/long rides etc
