kawasaki zx9r wont start???
« on: July 09, 2010, 07:54:48 PM »
ok i posted this on another site that im a regular user of but couldnt get a answer. can someone plz help me with this issue.

so my wrecked zx9 has been sittin for a lil over half year and rats got into the wires under the tank. turns out none of the wires seem chewed all the way thru but with a fully charged battery it wont turn the motor over. if you stick a battery booster to the starter it turns over, so i know the starters good.

my guess is its either wiring or something else im not familiar with. but i dont even know what else could be the issue which is why i need your help!!!!!!
i took the killswitch apart and inspected it throughly but nothin seems wrong in the switch.

does anyone have a diagram of the wiring so i can see what could go wrong?

does it even try to turn the motor over?

can you hear the fuel pump prime?

are you getting a spark?

does all the other electrics work? (lights etc..)

does it come on ok with the ignition?

tbh m8 it could be so many things, more info needed.

and if rats have been in there, regardless of wether it looks like they haven't gone right through theres a good chance they have.
bones are made to be pinned.ask my surgeon.!!

ok it doesnt even try to turn the motor but u can bump the starter with a jumper and hooking straight to the starter which makes me believe its wiring.

its carburated so with that said nothing happens when u first turn the key.

lights that are still intact work perfectly and so does the horn. ive tried two different batteries just in case.

should get spark but dont know for positive cuz the starter wont even turn. it ran about a month ago just fine.

im pretty sure that if jump started it would start but when i jumped the starter i had the fuel tank off and everything so i didnt even attemp to start the bike just turned the motor over once. and like i said as far as i can tell no wires are chewed threw jus the rubber shielding is gone.

It has a fuel pump that flicks in once or twice to pressurise the float boals (same as my old ZX6)

This should help you anyway

If you've junked the original fuse box (or even if you haven't) just
connect the green+blackstripe wire straight to earth to defeat all
clutch/stand/neutral interlocking and fire the starter
(yellow+redstripe) manually.

ok so earth is my ground correct? and when i fire the starter manually with the y/r wire, how am i doing this? surely not just hooking it to the power on the battery???

sorry im not big on wiring. really need to read up more on it but never have.

edit:
wow i feel like a real noob all the sudden. just checked teh junction box and the second 10 amp fuse down on the left side of the bike is blown. going to buy some fuses and get a new battery just to make sure everything is good.

ok its the ignition fuse. keeps blowing. so i have a new battery with a fresh charge on it. the brown wire runs from the ignition on the triple clamp and to the junction box. then a brown/white wire comes out to the first spark plug and to the ic igniter so im thinking hopefully the ic igniter isnt fried and the wire is just open somewhere and grounding out. at least i hope so....

any ideas, comments, questions?

As said already, your going to have to check your wiring with a circuit tester

yea i was scared you would say that. lol so how much voltage should be running through the wires? and the amps i take it should be less then 10 since its blowing a 10 amp fuse correct? im totally new to wiring and as much as i hate to i have to learn sometime!

you are looking for a short, not voltage.
basically you have to get your meter on to the ohms/test circuit, not a voltage circuit.
(test by holding the meter wires together and switching through the options until it reads something)
test from the wire to ground, if the meter reads then thats the wire shorting it.
it doesnt matter which way round the meter wires are, you are only looking for a reading.
earth wires dont count  :LOL
happy hunting

ok so i checked out the wiring with a voltage meter. and the only wires that beeped were grounds so i assume that the wiring is fine. i unpluged the brain box and turn the key over and the ignition fuse didnt blow then so i assume the brain box is fried! and also a side note. normally the starter button does nothing when u press it and i wired around my killswitches on the kickstand, clutch and brake and was using a wire straight to the positive on the battery. which wire do i need to tap into to get this bypass to work in the starter button?

ok, you appear to have reached the point where you need to get hold of a manual for your specific model.

If you hunt around on internet you should find one, or buy off ebay.

when you have manual you will be able to do all the specific checks in order to determine exactly what the fault is.

Cheers
Mike
