Suspension advice for the R1 please
« on: July 30, 2010, 07:29:12 AM »
Colin at 100% suspension has set up the suspension for me at Oulton park on both the R6 and the R1 and its perfect for the track.

On the road, the R6s suspension works fine, it goes over bumps compressing and rebounding as it should, firm but smooth, just how I like it.

The R1 on the other hand is like riding a pogo stick, it feels as its bouncing along, even on the motorway when you get little variations in the surface. It doesn’t feel dangerous, its just very uncomfortable compared to the R6. I don’t know if its compressing and rebounding too quickly, compressing correctly, but rebounding too quickly, or vice versa. It feels as though its coming from the front, but it could be the rear that’s causing the problem.

Coin did say that front rebound was almost at its limit and suggested getting the fork oil changed to a10 weight oil, I presume my Yamaha dealer would be able to do that?

The settings dialled in before Colin tweaked the suspension were:

FRONT Compression low clicks from fully in 18
FRONT Rebound clicks from fully in 12
REAR Compression high turns from fully in 2.5
REAR Compression low clicks from fully in 9
REAR Rebound Clicks from Fully in 15

The settings Colin made over a number of different sessions and track days resulted in the following:
FRONT Compression low clicks from fully in 15
FRONT Rebound clicks from fully in 2
REAR Compression high turns from fully in 2.5
REAR Compression low clicks from fully in 5
REAR Rebound Clicks from Fully in 7

He said I have very little to play with on the front rebound, hence his suggestion to get the fork oil changed. BTW how much would that cost?

He did suggest that one of the adjustments at the rear could be turned back two clicks for the road, but I cant remember which one.

Any suggestions you can make to stop the bike impersonating skippy the bush kangaroo would be welcome. I guess it will be one small change at a time, but I am unsure where to start.

Thanks

Steve

Did the same for me and My Gixer 750 @ Cadwell, made a lot of difference - I am tempted to get him to re-valve the front forks over the winter - based upon what he did at Cadwell should be worth the cash.

Not the advice you wanted I know but thought I would pass on my thoughts about 100 %

Good point, I am very happy with what colin has done, I think the problem is with the bikes, especially the forks

Cheers

Hello Steve why don't you give Colin a ring with your symptoms and i am sure he will put you in the right direction of what to adjust.
