1989 Honda 250 Trip Preparation
« on: January 30, 2011, 02:04:17 PM »
This is the bike i am using for this trip
http://www.superbikeforums.co.uk/index.php/topic,49982.0.html

It is a 1989 'G' reg Honda CD250U with 25,000 miles under its belt.
Purchased from Ebay for £330.00 with 12 months MOT and Tax  :005_sbiggrin:

Its not perfect and there are a multitude of things to sort out before i introduce it to the 3,300+ mile trip.

Here is a list of what i have noticed so far.

It did have a horrible vibration at mid revs, this was solved by tightening the front frame tube to the engine.
not good as the engine is a stressed member  :giggle

the Fork Gaiters need replacing.

it obviously needs a service.

the rear wheel needs removing and looking at as the sprocket looks 'warped'  :-\ i did notice a small gap behind the securing nuts so perhaps it has some washers missing and the nut has bottomed out on the stud.

I need to check if the gearing will be ok as the last owner said it maxed out at 70 but got there with no effort.
perhaps someone has altered the final drive.

Centre stand rattles.

Check head/swingarm/wheel bearings.

The left carburettor leaks slightly if the fuel is left on, it needs a new float assembly as it is plastic and has worn a groove where the needle valve sits.

Brake drum needs cleaning out and possible new shoes.
Caliper needs a quick service and maybe some new pads.

I need to make a rack from some metal i have.

I need to make a Topbox from plywood  :rotflmao:

Throw over panniers are ready and waiting.

this may result in a possible complete strip down and rebuild depending on what i find.

Pic of the bike as it is now.

tried the throw over panniers today, boy does it look the biz  :rotflmao:

the chain looked a bit scruffy so i removed it and dropped it in the parts washer
and gave it a good scrubbing.

got some clean 20/50 engine oil (not semi  :LOL ) half filled an old frying pan and dropped the chain in.
this was boiled on my garage heater  :giggle    then hung out to drain.
NOTE: not recommended for 'o' and 'x' ring chains  :o

the rear sprocket turned out to be ok, it is a fully floating one  :o

had half a day spare to get some more of the bike done.

the chain looked a bit worn after it was cleaned and lubed so i looked over at the sr250 and the chain was the same pitch but it was a new 'o' ring one. 2 links cut off and it went on the honda..... bonus!

i then straightened out the gear lever and rear brake lever as they were a bit twisted.
i removed the casing bolts, lubed them with a bit of grease and refitted them.

then i set about looking for metal to make the rack. i again looked over at the sr250 and it had a grab rail, this was measured up for fit....

robbed

nice fit

out came the cutting equipment and the mig

the result

what it looks like so far

next i need to make the topbox topcrate  :giggle
