completely new to bikes, just saying hi.
« on: January 22, 2012, 07:29:20 PM »
hi all, my name is andy and im a bus mechanic from north wales, ive never ridden bikes before but always wanted a superbike so ive now got to a time in my life at 36 where i can justify the expense of a 2nd mode of transport that i dont need but want. so to get the wheels in motion i bought a helmet in october and booked myself in for my cbt in novemer. over the christmas period i saved a few pound towards the rest of the gear i would need while seeing how well i come out of the expensive christmas period, and to be fair it went really well so i did my theory a couple of weeks ago and bought myself a RS125 (its no superbike i know) which i plan to use for a few months to get me some experience (desperately needed), i then sorted out the insurance yesterday and got me some gloves a jacket and some pants just incase it turns out that im rubbish on a bike.

so at this point i think i have done in the region of 20 miles in 20 years which includes my cbt and as a result i am a bit nervous about going out for the first time but also very excited,  so hopefully sometime this week we get a nice dry day and i'll go out for a bit of self training (wish me luck).

i know with where i am at the moment a superbike forum isnt really for me but i know that as soon as im good enough to get a licence it wont be long before i get myself on the 1st rung of the superbike ladder with something along the lines of a gsxr600.
so i thought i would get into the forum and start making friends and gaining knowledge as im sure i will be on a bigger bike before to long but im not rushing it due to my respect for the learning process and self preservation.

i look forward to getting to know you all and thanks for reading.

andy

Hello Andy and welcome to the site, no need to rush in, but on the other hand as long as you don't go mad you can get what you want.
I started riding 5 years ago, (I'm 37 now) i had never even been on a bike before not even on the feilds on a honda 50 :D. i did a direct access couse and bought a Gsxr600 srad. loved it and never looked back  :jump

Thanks for the welcome and the thumbs up for LFC.

Did you have a lack of confidence when you started out and if so how long did it last? I'm sure I'll be fine once I've got a couple of weeks under my belt I suppose I'm just apprehensive because it's something a bit different.

Just trying to make a good first impression lol I've seen too many noobs burn from a cocky first post.

It's just a matter of time before you see I'm not that sensible and I start with the dumb questions.

Cheers for the howdoo.

Thanks for the welcome and the sound advice, my instructor said a very scimilar thing, treat everyone like they haven't seen me that way I'll be better prepared to deal with what they do next. It's a shame we have to ride like that and I'm sure it must be just a small minority that couldn't care less about bikers, it's still a shame though.

Welcome  :wave

You sound sensible (that won't last on here  ;) )  My instructor told us to ride as if every b*ast*rd was out to kill you ... that works   Don't ride outside your comfort zone for the time being, just concentrate on gaining experience for a bit.  Rumour has it that the good weather will eventually get here so you have all the time in the world to get out there  :scooter

Thanks for the reply Claire, I've just had a look and I don't think the good weathers going to make it here this week, it looks like getting back towards zero with rain. Booo

Hi matey  :jump
I started on an RS125, awesome bit of kit that, learnt to kneedown on it. They do turn very fast which can make them feel nervous, but they give loads of feed back if you learn to feel for it. Make sure you always warm it up before you ride off and only put the best fully synthetic 2STROKE oil in it, done of this semi mineral crap else it gums up the power valve. I got mine in the dead of winter too and managed to stay on, I think its a good way to learn as you learn to feel for grip and what its like when there is none. That way when summer comes you`l be well away!

cheers biff and leanittiluloseit.

ive done quite a bit of research on how best to keep the RS and it seems they do need qiute a lot of specific attention but that wont be a problem for me as a mech with a "if it needs it, it gets it" kind of attitude. i really want to keep it good as it hasnt even been run in yet, its now on 250 miles and really mint so will make an excellent trade in when the time comes if i can keep it that way, heres hoping.

You will be fine - just enjoy - use the front brake more than the back and stay on the bike that is it really the rest just falls into place.
